Guide Mullet baitfish pattern is a unique blend by Dave McKenna. It pushes water and moves like a real baitfish. Materials chosen as much for lifelike movement as their cast-ability. Anglers can throw this fly all day without tiring, it’s light for its size, a key feature when hunting big animals with big flies. Guide Mullet is an absolute destroyer with tarpon of all sizes, snook, and the multitude of jack species we encounter all over the Caribbean. Any predator that eats mullet, bunker or sardines will attack this stealthy beast.
I saw the new Squiggle Legs from Hareline and knew I had the final component to the ultimate squid imitation. All the materials on The McSquid imitate every thing about a real squid. The shiny translucent body, the large glowing eyes, constantly moving legs and an articulating body that keeps the fly in motion all work together to make this one of the best squid imitations I could ever imagine.
The large glowing 3D Crocodile eyes are epoxied over a Flymen Fish Mask and heavy duty Allen big game hook.
These are very limited production and can be pre-ordered once the first run is gone.
The Nano Crab is a tiny crab that's designed by Dave McKenna to sneak up on the pickiest bonefish and permit. After receiving a pack of Semper Fli's new Guard Hair Chenille and matching micro chenille, Dave set out to make a better finesse crab. This fly lands like an Olympic diver but gets into the zone quick, without spooking tailing fish.
To keep this fly top-shelf quality, we use all Semper Fli Nano Silk Thread, UV Straggle Chenille, Guard Hair Chenille and Micro Chenille for matching claws. Nano Crab's are tied on short-shank, big game hooks to ensure solid hook sets into the hardest crushers.
Dave's Psycho Mantis
The Psycho Mantis was my first attempt to match the profile of a big mantis shrimp we were finding around the coral of the Faraway Keys base camp. Those one's were a whole variety of colors from white to tan and even bright green. It depended on the bottom they were living on. I knew it's what the big permit out there were smashing with their faces as they went tails up around the coral heads.
A few prototypes later and I had something that was delivering serious results for the first few anglers bold enough to throw a bright green peacock mantis imitation to a permit of a lifetime. The fly produced and continues to trick some of the most skeptical permit we encounter. We're excited to share the fly with even more fisheries and lodgesthis season!
The Psycho Mantis uses a custom combination of bright blue eyes, highly animating claws, micro rubber legs, contrasting rubber legs and a multi colored rabbit belly that pulsates and taunts permit and trophy bonefish. Hot orange dumbbells and a weed guard balance the Psycho so that it swims naturally and lands softly.
These are tied in small batches and sell very quickly!

Body Guard Crabs *NEW*
The Body Guard Crab is one of the most exciting crabs we've seen in a long time. This is one of our favorite additions to the 2020 lineup. It's another pattern made perfect by the new synthetic body chenille from Semper Fli. It lights up with natural coloration from a blend micro UV tinsel and translucent micro fiber. It mimics the natural moss and algae that cover natural crabs on the flats.
The Body Guard Crab is a crab that knows he's been spotted by a feeding permit. One claw is buried, digging for dear life, the fighting claw is out and swinging for faces. The hot orange brass eyes balance the fly just right to posture the claw up and towards the permits mouth. Micro chenille legs keep it animated and a belly of natural Guanaja sand leaves no doubt in the permits mind that he's in for an easy meal.
Our Tan Body Guard Crab is dyed with dark Honduran Coffee for the most natural sand color. These are tied in small batches and sell quickly when available.
The Crab Brulee is one of Guide Flies biggest secrets revealed. Look under every piece of coral on the flats and you find this creature. It’s our impressionistic answer to the Bauer’s Crab and every other imitation. Dave McKenna engineered this fly throughout the Caribbean for several years. After countless test drops, casts, splash analysis, and finally presentation, we are unleashing the beast. We can honestly say that every permit has attacked this fly when properly presented, granted it’s been in the field for only a short time. Enjoy the supreme dessert of permit flies, the Crab Brulee.
