GUIDE FLIES SIGNATURE SALTWATER FLIES
We spared no attention to detail when we develop our saltwater flies. Tied and tested on discriminating bonefish and permit at Fly Fish Guanaja, we’ve learned a thing or two about why these fish eat a fly or don’t. Once a fly is proven here, we know it works everywhere! Every bit of our collective guiding and tying experience is built into these premium flies.
NEW Flies for 2020
Tongue & Groove Shrimp *NEW*
Tim's Tongue & Groove Shrimp, this is the kind of fly that has always been coveted by the anglers and guides lucky enough to know Tim Gorrell. The famous Inagua, Bahamas guide Ezzard Cartwright loved this fly so much he named it after the punchline to one of his favorite jokes.
This is a limited edition fly tied by Tim himself. A combination of transparent materials, lifelike legs and a three-dimensional profile target the largest alpha bonefish on any flat. Get them while they last.
The Body Guard Crab *NEW*
Designed by Dave McKenna, The Body Guard Crab is one of the most exciting crabs we've ever presented to permit or big bonefish.
It's another pattern made perfect by the new synthetic Guard Hair Chenille from Semperfli. This fly lights up with natural coloration from a blend micro UV tinsel and translucent micro fiber. It mimics the natural moss and algae that cover natural crabs on the flats.
The Body Guard Crab imitates a fleeing crab that's evading a permit. One claw is buried, digging for dear life, the fighting claw is out and swinging for faces. The hot orange brass eyes balance the fly just right to posture the claw up and towards the permits mouth. Micro chenille legs keep it animated and a belly of natural Guanaja sand leaves no doubt in the permits mind that he's in for an easy meal.
Our Tan Body Guard Crab is dyed with dark Honduran Coffee for the most natural sand color. These are tied in small batches and sell quickly when available.
Tied on Premium Umpqua XS 410 Flats Hook for Spring 2021.
HD Camo Crabs *NEW*
By blending different colors of a new synthetic chenille from Semper Fli, we get a perfectly colored shell that absorbs light very naturally and moves like the moss and fuzz that real crabs are covered in across the flats. The naturally moving body material and complimenting colored legs bring the fly to life. The hot orange brass dumbbell adds a subtle trigger when light passes through the fly. We coat the bellies of all the HD Camo Crabs in special sand from our Guanaja beaches to give them the extra detail that set Guide Flies apart from all other flies.
These are tied in small batches and sell very quickly.
The Body Guard Mantis *NEW*
The Body Guard Mantis was designed by Dave McKenna to match a common mantis shrimp that we found all over the flats of our Faraway Keys base camp. They were aggressive with long, sharp claws. They were very translucent and matched whatever bottoms we found them on.
We had a few flies in our boxes that came pretty close but it wasn't until I came across a new material from Semper Fli that we really had a revelation in the pattern. "Guard Hair Chenille" was the magic material the Body Guard Mantis needed to go un-refused on any flat. This new materiall has small pearl UV micro tinsel built into a very translucent micro fiber the pulls light through the body of the fly just like the real thing.
We use contrasting rubber legs to match each color: Hot Orange/Tan rubber legs match our tan Body Guard, Pearl & Hot Orange rubber legs to match our white Body Guard Mantis and Hot OJ/Chartruese rubber legs to contrast the Olive Body Guard Mantis.
We knew we had a winner on our hands when we tested the newly designed Body Guard Mantis. Two casts and two permit later, Rankin was ordering them in every color for his upcoming 2020 season at Fly Fish Guanaja!
These are tied on Umpqua XS410 Premium Flats Hook.
Now available in #4!
We are custom dying the Tan Mantis in dark Honduran Coffee for the perfect sandy shade. We tie these in small batches and they sell very quickly.
Available in White, Tan and Olive
EXO Shrimp *NEW*
The Exo Shrimp is another new fly for 2020. It's quickly become a staple fly for the guide staff at Fly Fish Guanaja and the Delphi Club in Abaco, Bahamas during our field testing!
The EXO Shrimp has consistently landed large number of bonefish on some of the most technical flats of the Bahamas and our Guanaja home flats. I've designed the EXO Shrimp with a new synthetic body wrap that creates the perfect ribbed exo-skeleton profile with a combination of marabou like fibers highlighted with clear UV strands. This simple combination of materials give the fly constant leggy movement and captures light just like a natural shrimp shell.
A UV coated orange pearlescent under body folds over the rear of the body to create a realistic light orange spawn appearance. This shrimp casts easily and lands lightly.
